Welcome to the LEAP Program! You made a great decision to join LEAP. Your LEAP class will provide you with a solid foundation for success in your college career. Not only will you satisfy three graduation requirements in your two semesters with LEAP, but you are also a member of the LEAP community, which starts in the classroom but also extends beyond to include service, leadership, educational and social activities. Your Peer Advisor will help keep you informed about all of the great LEAP opportunities coming your way. You can also check “News and Announcements” to the left for upcoming events.
Here are some of the things you can do this year in LEAP:
- The year begins with the LEAP convocation in the Heritage Center.
- The LEAP Fall Picnic is usually held in September.
- Early in the semester you will begin your library research class, Writing 1060. This class is taught by a librarian and built into your LEAP class. You can get one unit of credit for this class (without doing any extra work) by registering for it in the spring. This option gives you seven units of credit for the two-semester LEAP. If you have questions about Writing 1060, ask you PA or LEAP professor.
- Glenn Bailey from Crossroads Urban Center visits every Fall to teach LEAP students about poverty.
- University College advisors will visit your class during the Fall semester to answer all of your questions about registering for next semester classes.
- LEAP students gets priority registration for spring. This means you’ll have as much as a week head start on other freshmen for registration.
- Peer Advisors usually conduct multiple workshops specifically for LEAP students in the LEAP House.
- LEAP 1050 is a one-unit class to help you with major selection. Consider taking it during spring semester in you’d like to explore different majors and careers.
- The PAs organize a fall and spring food drive to benefit Crossroads Urban Center.
- Consider applying to be a PA! One of the great things about LEAP is that it leads to great leadership opportunities. PA applications are due in early March.
- Scholarships! LEAP students have lots of scholarship opportunities.
- The year concludes with the LEAP Spring Picnic.
So, study hard, get involved, and have fun!
